The Flaming Lips' live DVD U.F.O.s at the Zoo turned up in my letterbox today. Watching it reminded me of the unreserved and joyful experience I had seeing them play at Big Day Out 2004. You will be either pleased or greatly disappointed that I missed Metallica to have the Lips experience.
This is a release on a new format that Warner is putting out, the MVI (for Music Video Interface). Along with the full-length concert, after registering online you can download MP3s of the entire concert plus wallpapers, ringtones and even make your own mix of 'The Yeah Yeah Yeah' song using NU-MYX.
I guess this is the first positive approach to piracy that I've seen this century. Instead of copy-protecting the disk, it is enriched with cool content and user interactivity. It's hardly groundbreaking though - most of the extra stuff reminded me of the added content, including videos and stuff, on Regurgitator's Unit Rebooted from 1998.
But who cares? The main thing that sold this DVD to me was that it came with a laser pointer that says 'The Flaming Lips Will Always Love You!!' which will stay in its wrapping until I sell it on eBay to pay the rent in a couple of years. Here's hoping, anyway.
Last night's Wednesday night of larfs was much better. Notably, The Chaser's War On Everything are back in the good books. That pantomime horse schtick was right up my alley, as was 'Stairway To Kevin'. I think they could have made more of the APEC footage, but it spoke for itself pretty well.
Hey, so four more weeks of uni and then I'm done. If anyone wants to employ an Arts grad with middling marks, an excellent sense of humour and a noble sense of right and wrong, shoot me a line.
